Because we spent the entire Holy Week at home, we simply had to go out of our cubbyhole to get a breath of fresh air and to discover new gastronomic delights. After hearing noon mass at Edsa Shrine, we went straight to SM Mall of Asia. It took us a while to find a place to eat, and we finally settled for Boon Tong Kee, a Singaporean restaurant. We obviously didn’t know what to order since we’re first timers here, so we asked for suggestions from our food attendant. We ended up ordering dishes with thumbs-up signs on their menu. We had Fried Spare Ribs with Zhen Jiang Sauce, Crispy Roast Chicken and Poached Chinese Spinach with Assorted Eggs.
Hubby and son ate most of this Fried Spare Ribs with Zhen Jiang Sauce. I searched Zhen Jiang Sauce online and found out that it’s a sweet and vinegary cooking sauce used for pork or chicken. Those Fried Spare Ribs were moist and tender without being greasy. And oh, father and son loved those soft, chewy and slightly sweet buns, too!
This Crispy Roast Chicken was crispy alright and flavorful, too, but a bit overpriced. We actually ordered this for our son, but he ended up liking the Fried Spare Ribs more.
My personal favorite was the Poached Chinese Spinach with Assorted Eggs. This creamy vegetable soup had spinach, century egg, salted egg, chicken egg and crispy fried anchovies on top. The soup alone was lightly seasoned, but the flavors of the other ingredients blended so well, I ended up having several cupfuls. Lol!
One thing we noticed about Boon Tong Kee was that there were a few items on their menu that weren’t available during our visit. I hope they can fix that so that they will have more satisfied customers.
